Tea Cup Candle Sconce Bird Feeder Tutorial

Like to attract bird’s to the backyard? Me too. Well…away from the patio where I enjoy sipping tea and starting my day with devotions.

The next time you’re at the thrift store, pick up an old candle sconce, tea cup and saucer to create a cute little bird feeder.

What I used:

candle sconce
tea cup & saucer
Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover x2 (satin aqua)
sanding block
damp rag
E600 glue
clamp tape

What I did:

Lightly sand and clean candle sconce. Apply light even coats of spray paint and let dry.

Using glue, attach saucer and tea cup to candle sconce (saucer first then tea cup after the saucer has dried).

This is the first time I’ve used clamp tape. LOVE it! Worked really well to keep the pieces together while glue dried.

Let dry according to glue package instructions.

Hang, fill with bird seed and enjoy!

Pretty outdoor decor too.

I haven’t noticed if the birds are enjoying it yet. The food disappeared but it may just happen to be feeding the squirrels. lol

DIY Nursery Wall Decor

I’ve been giving our guest room a bit of a makeover to include a little nursery space for my very first grand child who is scheduled to arrive next month. I can’t wait! You guys, a sweet baby boy will be here soon! I’m so excited, I can’t stand it!

Materials: I found this old oval wall art at the thrift store for 3.99.

I had the wrapping paper and felted deer head (used in our stairwell/landing makeover originally. I looked and it’s no longer for sale…sorry but I did see awesome paper mache deer heads at Michaels that would work well too…plus you can paint/decoupage to coordinate with your room.). So this is a thrifty treasure for me…just $3.99 for the dusty framed print + shopping the house since I had the spray paint on hand already too.

What I did: Gave everything a good cleaning and removed the backing from the frame (set aside).

I spray painted the frame gold and let it dry.

I traced the oval backing onto chevron wrapping paper. I did glue the wrapping paper over the print on the front. However, it’s not required if you’d like to preserve the print.

Then just reattached the backing to the frame.

I hung it on the wall and hammered a nail in the center to hang the felted deer head and added a DIY banner…just card stock, Project Life cards (scrapbook section at Michaels) and twine. I added a string of mini LED fairy lights too.

{Hospital} Bedside Table Makeover

One of the Lowe’s Creative Ideas challenges for September is furniture makeover…

I just happened to score this little thrifty treasure from the thrift store…

for the low, low price of $3.99! A cute {hospital} bedside adjustable table in need of some TLC.

I gave it a good cleaning then disassembled the parts.

After taping off the casters, I gave it a few light sprays with a metallic gold spray paint.

Once that was dry, I went back and forth on making a decision on the tray part. A shelf board would work. So would a serving tray.

I went with the serving tray. I reassembled and used smaller wood screws to attach the tray to the frame.

Now it’s a convenient bedside accessory…

I liked that it has a lip since the tray tilts forward. Great for holding a book or tablet.

Adjust to the table top position for a portable desktop, breakfast in bed or bedside, chair side or couch side table.

Makes for a pretty side table too…

Tea Cup Succulent Planters

It’s become a tradition! Last year for Mother’s Day, the females in our family each planted flowers in chandelier planters. This year, we worked on another planting project but on a much smaller scale. Bri and I scoured the thrift stores for tea cups and saucers.

And everyone planted some succulents in their tea cups.

So cute! Now to decide where to display mine…

Add a Pop of Color to Your Decor (step stool makeover)

The Lowe’s Creative Ideas challenge for May is Pop of Color. We’ve been working on a laundry room makeover (still in progress) and while my goal is to keep the walls and fixtures neutral, I wanted to introduce fun pops of color in small amounts with accessories that I could easily swap out when the mood (often) strikes. Spray paint is a great way to update old pieces to add a pop of color to your existing decor.

With the washer and dryer on a DIY pedestal, adding a step stool to the laundry room was necessary and this $10 vintage step stool was a great estate sale find…don’t you love the wooden carrying handle? Sweet!

…it just needed a little DIY TLC.

I carefully removed the old tread and used it as a pattern for a newer piece (rubber stair tread available at Lowe’s) since I wanted the stool to have the same original look (only not quite so worn, chipped and peeling).

Next I gave the stool a light sanding and wiped it clean.

The color I chose is Valspar’s Paint + Primer spray paint (Luscious Green). I applied one coat, let it dry then sprayed another.

I re-used the old tacks to attach the new piece of tread.

And it’s as good as new and adds an awesome pop of color to our laundry room.

Painted Wooden Candlesticks

I recently shared an easy mirror update inspired by a wood + turquoise bowl…

Then I spied a set of three {Ty Pennington Style…love his style, don’t you?} candlesticks for $4.99 at the thrift store and couldn’t resist creating a wood + turquoise collection.

Materials:

Wooden candlesticks
FrogTape®
Paint (Maison Blanche Furniture Paint, color is “colette”.)

What I did:

I simply wrapped the FrogTape® around my candlesticks to create an angled design.

Using my thumbnail, I burnished the edges of the FrogTape.

Then simply applied two coats of paint with a foam brush.

While the paint was still wet, I carefully pulled away the FrogTape to reveal a crisp, straight, clean paint line.

The design varies depending on which side faces out.

Now they’re a one of a kind Ty Pennington/DIYShowOff style! Working with him and he isn’t even aware. Maybe it’s for the best as he may not be flattered that I altered his design. 😉

Then let them dry. Add candles and display! So cute! West Elm log vase is from my secret Santa…love it!
