DIY Vinyl Iron on Decal

My monthly project for Happy Crafters is all about iron on vinyl, my favorite being the gold vinyl where I can quickly add a little bling to a plain t-shirt, tote back, pillow covers, onesies, etc.

Tutorial:

Use Silhouette Design Studio software to create a design of text with a quote.

Resize text the text box and font to fit the front of your t-shirt.

*Important! Right click and “flip horizontally” so that the text is a mirror image/backwards.

Load sheet of vinyl iron on into the machine shiny/color side facing down.

Click “send to cut” and be sure to adjust settings for cutting smooth heat transfer. I found that I needed to up the blade 2 more than recommended to get through the vinyl (awesome quality stuff!) so you may want to do a small text cut.

Click “cut”. Once cutting is complete, remove vinyl from machine.

Trim away excess vinyl. I like to have about an inch border around my text.

Weed away the negative part of the design (leaving text on the tacky clear transfer sheet).

Place iron on sticky side down onto t-shirt.

Iron according to paper instructions included with the vinyl iron on material with a cotton cloth over the transparent plastic.

Carefully peel away clear transfer sheet. If vinyl iron on design hasn’t transferred, replace transparent sheet and re-iron/try again.

That’s it! This metallic gold foil has a mirror quality, reflections in the decal. So cool!

Striped DIY “Love You More” Sign

I like to incorporate a little Valentine’s vibe into my decor this time of year but I prefer to have decorative accents that can withstand longer time frame. Creating a “love” themed vignette works year round and this striped scrap wood sign is the perfect focal point.

Materials I used:

  • scrap wood for canvas
  • paint
  • FrogTape® Multi-Surface
  • vinyl decals

What I did:

Sand edges and clean scrap wood canvas.

striped Valentine LOVE sign @diyshowoff.com

Paint base color and let dry. I did two coats.

striped Valentine LOVE sign @diyshowoff.com

Use FrogTape to create stripes. I started with a center stripe and worked my way out. Just eyeball it. Use a small piece of FrogTape for spacing.

Burnish the edges of the FrogTape using a thumbnail or credit card.

Paint stripes. I did two coats.

While second coat of paint is still wet, remove FrogTape. Let paint dry.

I added DIY vinyl decals. Other options include a print/rub technique (print out wording, rub pencil on the back of the paper then place paper on wood sign and trace lettering) and paint or marker or stickers…get creative!

Now I have a “love” themed vignette perfect for Valentine’s day and a wood canvas sign that I can display all year round (cute for the nursery too)!

Valentine Mason Jars

Being able to create your own vinyl decals makes last minute quick gifts easy. You’ll need:

Valentine's Day mason jars Happy Crafters

Of course you can create your own designs by just cutting things out with scissors but investing in a vinyl cutter has proven to be well worth the it. I simply created some Valentine designs and circles for mason jar lids using the Silhouette Design Studio software…

Personalized Baby Gift Set

I love being creative when it comes to baby gifts and personalizing a baby layette set with iron-on vinyl decals is just so easy to do!

DIY personalized baby layette gift set @diyshowoff

Supplies:

What I did:

Using my Silhouette studio designer edition software, I created a few fun decals.

DIY personalized baby layette gift set @diyshowoff

For iron-ons, text (and some images) will need to be mirrored/flipped horizontally. Simply right click and choose “flip horizontally”.

DIY personalized baby layette gift set @diyshowoff

Load the vinyl into the machine shiny side down (the shiny side is the transparency side).

DIY personalized baby layette gift set @diyshowoff

Adjust settings for cutting heat transfer material and send to cut. Unload vinyl from the machine. (Note: I do not use a cutting mat as shown below.)

DIY personalized baby layette gift set @diyshowoff

Cut off the excess vinyl/material and weed (remove) the unwanted part of the the vinyl leaving just the decals.

DIY personalized baby layette gift set @diyshowoffDIY personalized baby layette gift set @diyshowoff

Set iron according to heat instructions provided with vinyl iron on.

Place iron on decal, shiny side facing you (iron on isn’t sticky but the clear transparency is…sticker side down to help hold iron on in place).

DIY personalized baby layette gift set @diyshowoff

Cover with a cotton diaper cloth, burp cloth or towel and heat iron on according to instructions.

Carefully peel away transparency (if iron on pulls up too, re-place and iron some more).

What you’ll need: a vinyl cutter (or cut vinyl out by hand using scissors)

Happy Face Pattern Adhesive Vinyl - Holiday 8 Pack

Tutorial:

Using the Silhouette Studio Designer software, create individual designs…I created one for wrapping each block (measure and add up all side of each block for width and the height of block), three individual rectangles for the top of each block. Then the letters J – O – Y (be sure to create a size that will fit nicely on the front of each block).

JOY vinyl design

For wrapping each block, I used the striped vinyl and the patterned vinyl for lettering.

For each design, load vinyl into the machine pattern side facing up.

Send design to cut. Adjust settings for cutting vinyl. Cut.

Metallic Gold Arrow Accent Wall Tutorial

A small plain wall is a great spot for adding some pattern and detail to a room. This small wall in the apartment nursery nook was just begging for a little attention. Here’s what we did to give it some pizzazz:

metallic gold arrow wall at diyshowoff.com

Arrow Accent Wall Tutorial

Materials:

What worked for me:

I started with creating triangle (arrowhead) vinyl stickers in my Silhouette Design Studio software. (Since I had some extra space, I created a few vinyl decals including the letter A and a deer head as well…they aren’t a part of this project.)

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

I hit the “cut” button and adjusted the settings on my blade for vinyl.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

Load the vinyl into my Silhouette Cameo color side facing up.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

Hit “cut” and remove from machine.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

Weed away the excess vinyl (the vinyl that’s not a part of the design). Vinyl stickers. That fast!

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

On the wall using a level and Sharpie, I drew vertical lines evenly spaced part.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

We then decided on placement of the arrow heads, alternating the direction every other line.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

I cut a “chevron” pattern from cardboard and used it to create arrow tails, again, evenly spaced and alternating the direction every other line.

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoffmetallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

Ali used a piece of damp magic eraser to erase the Sharpie line between arrows (note for potential future reference: magic eraser works on removing permanent marker from walls).

metallic arrow wall design tutorial @diyshowoff

That’s it. I was hoping for a more staggered look, but even with drawing it out on paper, the final design had an alternating horizontal pattern too. Cool!
